Part Three: Building Blocks

There are various ways to do most things in Dreamweaver, so we'll give you different ways to accomplish some basic tasks. Pick the ones that match your work style.

Tables

If you've got the Objects Palette open, you can insert a table by pressing the second button down on the left. The resulting pop-up window

lets you select the properties of the table.

Some prefer to remove the Objects Palette, since it doesn't do much for the real estate it takes up. If you have it closed, select Table from the Insert menu.

If you're working in layout view, you can create tables by pressing the Draw Layout Cell or Draw Layout Table buttons, located toward the bottom of the Objects Palette. If you want to add pictures or layers to those tables, you'll have to switch back to standard view.

It's easy to modify a table's layout. If you want to spit a cell, put your cursor in the cell and press the split cell button in the lower left of the Properties Window. To make two cells into one, highlight them both, then press the merge button, also in the lower left of the Properties Window.

Forging Links

Likewise, there are many ways to insert links to your pages. The easiest might be to highlight the text or image you want linked, mouse down to the Properties Window, then press the folder icon next to the blank link textbox. A pop-up window will show your file structure. Pick the link's destination and click "Open." If the destination isn't local, type the URL in the textbox.

Another option for local links is to use the Point-to-File icon, which is the round icon next to the link textbox in the Properties Window. Click and hold it, then drag your pointer to the Site Files Window, until you highlight the page you want for the link. You'll find that folders open as you mouse over them, so that you can select the correct file.

Fireworks

If you've bought Dreamweaver along with Macromedia's image creation and optimization program Fireworks (and Macromedia really hopes you did), you'll find that it's easy to edit your images while you're working on your site. Select the image to edit, then press the Edit button at the bottom of the Properties Window. Fireworks will launch. Alternately, you can hold down the Control key (Windows) or the Command key (Macintosh) and double-click the image.

Other External Image Editors

Fireworks might be default image editor for Dreamweaver, but don't feel strong-armed into using it. To switch your primary editor, go to Edit/Preferences and choose File Types/Editors [Image 5]. Select the file type to change in the lower left window. If you don't see your preferred application in the lower right window, press the "+" key to add it. Then highlight that new addition and press Make Primary. Hit OK to save.
