Lucent Technologies said it has successfuly demonstrated secure wireless Internet protocol (IP) virtual private network (VPN) connections. The tests involved the establishment of secure data access from a universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) data test terminal connected to a corporate intranet over a Lucent 3G UMTS network.

According to Lucent, its secure IP VPN mobility solution will help operators of 3G UMTS networks enter the emerging market for secure communications between enterprise data networks and end-users such as traveling employees or remote workers. The company said the secure IP VPN connections will enable mobile subscribers to use a service provider's wireless network as an extension of their corporate local area network (LAN) or intranet, allowing them to work from any location as if they were in the office.

Lucent said the secure Internet Protocol (IP) VPN connection was established using the Lucent Flexent GGSN (Gateway General Packet Radio Service Support Node), a data platform based on the Lucent's SpringTide 7000 Wireless IP Services Switch. The Flexent GGSN is a carrier-class platform optimized to support the data networking needs of 3G UMTS mobile operators, supporting advanced security functions such as firewall and network address translation, and providing application bandwidth management capabilities.

The company said that over the secure wireless IP VPN, the 3G UMTS-enabled mobile data test terminal was able to access enterprise application servers within a Lucent Data Center via a point-to-point protocol (PPP) and IPsec connection. The end-user was authenticated and assigned an IP address, and then was able -- once the connection was established -- to successfully send and receive email, including messages with large attachments, in a fully encrypted mode, thus allowing even sensitive data to be accessed.
