NewsGator's Latest Sinks Teeth into Information Glut

NewsGator Technologies, Inc. this week released NewsGator Enterprise Server 1.3, the latest version of its market-leading, business-class RSS aggregation and distribution platform.

A behind-the-firewall offering, NGES provides companies with technology for finding, distributing, and sharing RSS feeds across groups. Employees can access internal and external RSS feeds within Microsoft Outlook, a range of mobile devices, corporate portals, and the Web without having to download client-side software.

NewsGator's latest comes at a time when businesses are finding benefits beyond the standard mass-consumption blogs and RSS feeds. RSS feeds are increasingly being used to put out feeds from internal blogs, internal ERP applications, e-mail, and from groups within an organization.

Analysts and even Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates have lately been talking about the information glut and how to manage it.

"A key business issue facing enterprises is finding the most effective way to manage the information flow of both external and internal content," said Robert McCullough, a business applications analyst with the Yankee Group. "RSS has emerged as a viable platform … to provide employees with relevant information and collaboration tools, which can directly impact efficiency and improve productivity."

"With the rapid growth of both internal and external feeds, companies are realizing that the management and distribution of that content should be handled on a centralized basis," said J.B. Holston, president and CEO of NewsGator. "By working closely with customers … we have improved the knowledge management, collaboration, and administrative tools (in NewsGator Enterprise Server)."

Enhancements within NGES 1.3 include:

  • SharePoint Team Portal integration -- Enables the publishing of feeds to a Microsoft SharePoint portal site that members of a group can view.

  • Group clippings -- This knowledge management feature allows a member of an internal team or group to take important items, add a comment, and drop them into a folder, which is then turned into an RSS feed to which others can subscribe.

  • Refined article and feed searching -- Users can customize searches for only internally generated/published content.

  • Feed creation from e-mail -- Users can easily turn emails into RSS feeds.

  • Improved user interface --New look and feel, improved navigation and support for icons from feed publishers.

  • Localization -- Allows organizations to customize the software for foreign languages.

NewsGator Enterprise Server 1.3 is available now and priced on a per-user basis. NewsGator is headquartered in Denver.
