A flurry of product announcements were made this week, some coinciding with the Interop trade show in New York, but most just on-schedule, September product revs.

In the fast-growing content management and enterprise search arenas, IBM, Mambo, and ISYS made three of the biggest announcements.

Taking the latter first, ISYS Search Software this week took another leap in the field of enterprise and desktop search. The company announced the availability of ISYS 8, its next-generation suite for search, navigation, and discovery.

ISYS says the suite is designed to address the entire scope of information access needs. It is comprised of three core products: ISYS:desktop 8, ISYS:web 8, and ISYS:sdk 8. The suite includes many new features that address a company's search requirements, including:

  • Text mining, e-discovery, and expertise location via ISYS Entities.

  • Power and scalability through content caching, scripting, and federated search support.

  • Adherence to business rules via tuning and editorial controls such as Best Bets.

  • Full-featured search analytics capabilities through enhanced ISYS SearchTrends.

  • Broader content support, including Microsoft SharePoint and Office 2007.
  • "With ISYS 8, we further distance ourselves from limited and inflexible appliance-based search systems, while remaining much more reasonably priced than competing software-based solutions," said Ian Davies, founder and managing director of ISYS.

The enhancements are designed to ensure that workers spend less time looking for information and more time using it. A closer look at some of the capabilities include:

    ISYS:desktop 8

  • Enhanced interface -- ISYS:desktop 8 now delivers an even more intuitive interface, due to collapsible menus and a built-in search window.
  • Associated documents -- To help users better understand the context of a given result, ISYS now displays a search result's associated documents -- particularly handy when dealing with e-mails and their attachments.
  • Core ISYS 8 Features

  • New document formats -- ISYS 8 now supports .wma, .wmv, and .xps formats, as well as Microsoft Office 2007 formats (based on the current Microsoft beta).
  • Content caching -- Content caching offers the ability to rapidly extract portions of large or slow documents, thus delivering faster browsing, summarization, and analysis.
  • Improved performance -- ISYS 8 offers even faster indexing than was possible with version 7, with indexing speeds of up to 20 GB per hour.
  • New Mambo Dances to a Faster Beat

Also this week, Mambo, the award-winning open source content management system, announced the release of version 4.6. This is the first major release in almost two years and provides users with a leaner, faster Mambo with improved scalability, stability, and more choices.

Version 4.6 is being released in two configurations: 4.6 Complete includes the core system as well as an assortment of the most popular extensions and templates. 4.6 Lite is comprised of only the core files.
