"Corporate and SMB customers will, I think, find 4.6 to be a giant step closer to the sort of CMS product they want and need," said Ric Shreves, president of the Mambo Foundation Board of Directors.

Mambo 4.6 improvements include:

  • More templates. New variants to the default template have been added to this release.

  • More helpful help. New help screens have been added and the help system has been expanded to help decrease inaccuracies in the delivery of help content.

  • Speed boost. A faster, cleaner Mambo, with more potential for development. While all sites will see performance gains, large sites with high activity levels will notice in particular improved load handling and fewer bottlenecks.

  • Better search engine optimization. Improves avoidance of server load problems and provides better handling of bad URLs by means of 404 errors.

  • New RSS newsfeed reader (Magpie) that is more efficient and powerful.

  • Multiple bug fixes and minor enhancements. 4.6 resolves a number of open issues.

On Wednesday, IBM announced the availability of IBM Workplace Web Content Management 6.0, which offers easy customization tools that assist with content creation and provide integration with WebSphere Portal.

Big Blue said the new Web content system delivers easy-to-use authoring tools, making it simple for non-technical users to create, publish, and share customized, up-to-the minute Web content.

Other features of the suite include:

  • Openness and interoperability with other content authoring packages: Web Content is now stored in the Java Content Repository (JCR). This allows authors to publish content as a Real Syndication Stream (RSS) or Atom feed using simple Web content management presentation templates.

  • A simplified process for authors to create personalization rules for content: An author can now pick and choose from a set of actions to create a personalization rule for the piece of content they own. For example, insurance agents can make sure that if users logging-in to their Web site own property insurance, they will see content about new trends in property protection.

  • Ease-of-use improvements for non-technical authors including "in-context" editing: Authors can make edits directly in the Web site portal view to instantly see their edit results and to avoid switching to a less-familiar software program.

  • New link management enhancements to secure the reliability and reputation of information in a public forum, such as a Web site: Protection against broken or non-working URLs.

  • Pricing and Availability

IBM Workplace Web Content Management is available as a stand-alone offer or packaged with WebSphere Portal 6.0. Customers who purchase six units of Portal will receive one unit of Workplace Web Content Management. Otherwise, new customers and IBM Portal Server 6.0 customers can purchase WCM for approximately $20,000 per processor.
