Case Study: RedDot Speaks Powerwave's Lingo

Powerwave Technologies -- a global supplier of end-to-end wireless solutions for wireless communications networks -- selected RedDot to manage and deliver multi-lingual content across its Web sites and customized extranets for key customers. RedDot proved to be the right choice, because within three months, our entire site was and up and running and even translated into Chinese.

At Powerwave, we design, manufacture and market antennas, boosters, combiners, filters, repeaters, multi-carrier RF power amplifiers and tower-mounted amplifiers, and advanced coverage solutions, all for use in cellular, PCS, and 3G networks throughout the world. Powerwave has experienced significant growth in recent years, particularly in its international markets. To support this growth, we needed to increase our global Web presence by developing localized Web sites.

The first initiative was for a Chinese-language site, with plans for several more in the near future. We also wanted to create customized, private extranets for several key customers, where we could provide them with account specific information that wasn't available through our public site.

With years of expertise in Web development, I immediately recognized that a new Web content management system was needed to meet Powerwave's requirements. Our top three requirements for the CMS were: multiple language support, the ability to quickly build secure, personalized extranets and ease-of-use, since our existing CMS was too complicated for any one but my IT department to use. We conducted an extensive competitive evaluation of the major content management systems, including PlumTree, Interwoven, and RedDot. RedDot was the only company that met our requirements. RedDot was able to provide it all -- multilingual support and translation content functionalities, extensive personalization capabilities for our extranets and a content editor that would be easy for our content managers to make edits to the site. No other solution came close to providing all of that at a price point that made sense.

After a short training session, the Human Resources, Marketing and IT departments are now able to access, based on individual rights, appropriate parts of the Web site, whether it's the whole site, everything but the home page or a section specific to their group. Using the RedDot SmartEdit tool, they easily make updates, thankfully eliminating my department from the update process.

With the implementation of RedDot CMS, Web site content is updated much more frequently because the system is so easy to use. Before, business users hesitated to make changes because of the degree of difficulty -- any change required six to seven steps, lots of time and emails back and forth.

Human Resources is one of the most active groups. Though they are not web programmers, everyone in the department now posts new and updated content. It took about a half hour of training to show them how to create and edit content. They work with the RedDot SmartEdit tool, right on the page within the context of the design, layout and the structure of the site. All they do is click on the "red dot" and make the change or add content.

Simple Translations

Powerwave's Chinese Web site is just as easy to update and maintain. As changes are made to our main Web site, the Translation Editor in RedDot CMS tracks these changes and submits them into a workflow. I alert the translation agency when I want updates made, they then log into RedDot CMS and translate everything in their task box. The translation agency sees side-by-side comparisons of the current Chinese Web site and the English site with any changes indicated in color. They make the appropriate translations right in RedDot CMS, hit publish and it's done.

RedDot CMS also allows me to view and manage the translation agency's task list. For example, if there is a job opening based in the U.S., I can easily click on a button that says "do not translate" and it removes that update from the agency's task box. The process is streamlined and cost effective.

Personalized Extranets: By Customer, Region, Title, And Role

Our third CMS requirement -- extranets -- was an easy task with RedDot.
