SAP, Open Text Form ECM Powerhouse
Tom Dunlap 5/11/2007 Two giants in the business software world, SAP and Open Text, are forging a deeper relationship to help companies manage their growing amount of data and documents. SAP said that it will resell solutions from Open Text, one of the largest providers of enterprise content management software after significant acquisitions last year. The German software giant said that Open Text's solutions complement SAP's existing document management capabilities and that the partnership will help customers increase business process efficiency, reduce risks, and ensure compliance with government regulations.
The partnership continues a trend in the ECM arena, where numerous smaller companies compete with the likes of Oracle (which bought Stellent last year) and IBM (which snapped up FileNet.) The market for these products is huge, as SAP is the world's leading provider of a particular strata of business software, with more than 39,400 customers in more than 120 countries. SAP will resell applications marketed under the names SAP Archiving by Open Text and SAP Document Access by Open Text. The archiving and document access applications are targeted toward the financial services industry as well as public sector organizations, healthcare companies, and other service companies. "Our enhanced relationship with Open Text underscores our commitment to empower customers to take a holistic approach to enterprise content management," said Tom Shirk, president of SAP Global Public Services. "The ease of use for data and documents is a key pillar in any document management initiative, and, in particular, in the services industries." The combined applications include the following:
