Ever since Apple's iPhone was introduced, fans of Lotus Notes lamented the fact that there was no push email solution that supported the IBM Lotus product. You could use IMAP to get your mail, but there was no real-time two-way solution like you could get on a Blackberry. That all changes with the release of Lotus Traveler 8.5.1.
Traveler requires the recently released Lotus Domino 8.5.1 in order to run, but it finally gives Notes fans two-way synchronization of email, calendar and contacts to the built-in iPhone applications. Traveler is included with Domino 8.5.1 and gives you a great reason to upgrade your servers today.
Traveler is simple to install and easy to get up on an end user's device. I'll walk you through the steps one by one.
Server Installation
IBM Lotus Traveler is a separate install from Lotus Domino 8.5.1. Once you have 8.5.1 installed, you bring down Domino, and then install Traveler 8.5.1. I'll go through the process.
Take the Lotus Traveler installation file and double-click it. You'll see and InstallAnywhere screen that will prepare the install. After all the files unpack, the installation wizard will kick off. Choose your language and click OK.
You start through the wizard and will come to a screen where you can click next to continue. There is also a button that will take you to the Traveler Info Center on the web. This is the place for full documentation on the product. Go ahead and click Next.
Accept the terms of the license agreement and click Next.
You then have the choice to install the complete package or just the Server or Client software only. You should just leave this as Complete. The iPhone doesn't need client software but some other mobile devices do, so having it doesn't hurt anything.
