Exact definition of intranet and extranet?

This term seems bandied around. Some people say intranet consists of sites accessed by employees whether they are at HQ or remote (coming in through the firewall). Extranets are sites accessible by customers or sales partners (non-employees). Others say that intranet are sites accessible only behind the firewall, whereas the extranet are sites accessible by employees and customers/sales partners both behind and outside the firewall. Which is correct? Or is there yet another definition?
