Carolyn, I have to respectfully disagree... I think it's essential that an Intranet site be marketed in every medium available, including paper-based vehicles and email. If you market the Intranet only ON the Intranet, you're just preaching to the choir.

At my (large) company, we recently started a weekly newsletter delivered to every employee by email. The email gives top-line information about half a dozen or so topics, then provides links to further information on that topic on the Intranet. Too early yet to measure impact, but anecdotal evidence suggests that some employees are coming to the Intranet for the first time via this newsletter.
