The curious and, until now, quiet partnership between Netscape and Novell has apparently been hard at work, gauging from last week's announcement of shipping beta products by joint subsidiary Novonyx. The startup's Netscape® Enterprise Server for NetWare®, Netscape Messaging Server for NetWare and NetScape FastTrack for NetWare entered customer testing as Novonyx announced plans to ship the complete set of Netscape SuiteSpot intranet servers for the NetWare platform by year-end 1998.
Separately, Novonyx announced a partnership with Oracle®, its preferred database partner, to include a full development and deployment version of the Oracle database in its forthcoming Enterprise Pro Server. Enterprise Pro for NetWare offers native database integration, enabling businesses to use their NetWare platforms as Web-based application servers that provides transparent database access via the Netscape Enterprise Web server.
"We jumped at the chance to begin testing Novonyx SuiteSpot servers," said Robert Forras, Project Lead, Emerging Technologies, for Calvin Klein, Inc. "We've made significant investments in our NetWare network, and the ability to add standards-based, NDS-integrated intranet solutions on top of our existing infrastructure is very compelling. Because Novonyx is in a unique position to work so closely with Novell and Netscape, we believe the Novonyx applications will prove to be fast, reliable and easy to implement."
The Web for LAN fans
Novonyx, formed jointly by Netscape Communications Corp. and Novell, Inc. in June 1997, adapts and sells Netscape's SuiteSpot Internet and intranet solutions for Novell's NetWare 4 network operating system. The company's first products -- NetScape Enterprise Server for NetWare, Netscape Messaging Server for NetWare and NetScape FastTrack for NetWare, will be available to all customers in an open beta planned for the end of November.
The product line offers NetWare 4 customers:
- A high-performance Web and application server that supports JavaScript and offers seamless connectivity to Oracle databases via LiveWirePro
- A scaleable, feature-rich message server that supports Internet standards SMTP, POP3 and IMAP4
- Complete integration with Novell Directory ServicesTM (NDSTM) with LDAP support, simplifying intranet administration and ensuring compliance with open directory standards
- Admin Server, which provides a common administration console across all SuiteSpot applications
- NetWare Runtime, which allows customers to easily and quickly add Enterprise Server and Messaging Server to existing networks
- JavaScript Support and Web Database Access Key to Novonyx Web Solution.
The Netscape Enterprise Server for NetWare brings JavaScript to the NetWare platform for the first time, enabling NetWare customers to use JavaScript to create Web applications for their corporate intranets. Novonyx's Enterprise Pro solution uses JavaScript to provide native Web-based database access from the NetWare platform.
"The NetWare platform is a key market for Oracle, and we are pleased to be working with Novonyx to give NetWare users Web access to Oracle databases," said Larry Robinson, director of Oracle's Novell Products Division. "Netscape SuiteSpot for NetWare makes NetWare a superior Web-based application server, allowing database information to be quickly and easily accessed from customers' corporate intranets."
Family affair
Following shipment of its current server line, Novonyx will complete migration of the remaining Netscape SuiteSpot Servers to NetWare next year:
* Calendar, Collabra and Proxy servers by mid-year 1998
* Certificate and Compass servers by year-end 1998.
"Novonyx SuiteSpot applications enable customers to build a full-service intranet while leveraging the NetWare investments they've already made," said Ezra Gottheil, senior analyst with the Hurwitz Group, a Massachusetts-based software research firm. "The fact remains that the majority of businesses with computer networks use NetWare. An integrated, easy-to-install suite of servers such as SuiteSpot gives these businesses the ability to create an open, standards-based intranet that can improve productivity and reduce costs."
Seeing is believing
Customers and resellers have the opportunity to see Novonyx solutions firsthand during the Novonyx 97 Roadshow, which kicks off this week in Salt Lake City. Novonyx, along with co-sponsors Novell, Netscape and Compaq, will bring the roadshow to nine additional U.S. cities in November and December including Tampa, Washington, D.C., New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Dallas, Los Angeles and San Jose. For roadshow dates and to register, visit the Novonyx Web site or call 1-888-NOVONYX.
