Large companies are realizing they need to strengthen their trading partner relationships in order to compete effectively, and secure internetworking is part of the solution. Because extranet technology is not a core competency of most corporations, however, the market for outsourced extranet solutions is growing. Case in point: GE Information Services launched in October 1998 GE InterBusiness Partner 2.1, a comprehensive suite of extranet tools and services aimed at jumpstarting deployment and implementation of large scale enterprise extranets.

As an outsourced business-to-business extranet solution from GE Information Services, the new platform offers enhanced security via digital certificates and SSL v.3.0, advanced multi-tiered administration and scalability to more than 50,000 users per community.

Scalable stability

GEIS' expertise in managing the world's largest electronic trading community is what enables it to provide "comprehensive extranet solutions that offer strategy consulting, application development and integration, 24x7 hosting, and ongoing community management," according to Jim Naughton, global marketing manager of extranet solutions.

GE InterBusiness Partner 2.1 addresses the risks and costs of unpredictable community growth by offering companies the capability to rapidly scale from a small stakeholder group to tens of thousands of users. GE can provide this scalability through its international data centers, without paying the performance penalty or incuring the equipment costs of less distributed systems.

"We have a long history in managing large electronic commerce trading communities," said Richard Jabara, global product manager for GE's InterBusiness Partner, "and our experiences with large, complex organizations have shown us how to build and deploy extranet applications quickly and securely."

Delegating control

While most extranet applications provide for a single administrative interface for the entire community, larger extranets need a hierarchy of sub-administrators to manage different segments of the community. The new GE services feature multi-tiered user administration that can be customized to distribute administration judiciously across the community.

GE InterBusiness Partner can be accessed securely through either GE's private TCP/IP network or the World Wide Web. The solution enables an enterprise to promote communications and showcase information within its community via bulletin boards, web pages, electronic mail and directory services while leveraging investments in existing systems.

Complementing this technology, GE provides end-to-end professional services including consulting, partner ramping, application development and deployment, integration with in-house systems, and support services.

GE Information Services is one of the eleven key businesses of the General Electric Company, USA and is headquartered in Rockville, MD, USA.
